Laraib Tahir Struck, Killed Big Rig Truck at Fresno Intersection; Elliott Tipton Hurt
FRESNO, Calif. (Sept. 5, 2018) — Laraib Tahir, 23, of Fresno, has been identified by the Fresno coroner as the woman who was killed yesterday when she was struck by a big rig truck.
Tahir and Elliott Alexander Tipton, 31, of Fresno were both struck Wednesday morning by a semi-tractor trailer truck at the intersection of Shaw and Garfield avenues, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported to the CHP about 6:09 a.m. The Fresno Fire Department responded to the scene to help the two pedestrians, but sadly Tahir died of her injuries. Tipton suffered major injuries and was hospitalized.
According to the Fresno Bee, Jose R. Medrano, 52, of Pinedale , was reportedly driving the big rig truck about 45 mph when he saw the two victims running or walking in the westbound lane. He attempted to stop, but was unable to avoid hitting them. The crash remains under investigation by police to determine fault.
Fresno Truck Accident Investigation
A full investigation into what caused this collision is underway. It’s unknown if the pedestrian was walking on the shoulder of the roadway or attempting to cross the street. There are no stop signs on Shaw Avenue for traffic and no crosswalk at this unmarked intersection. However, pedestrians always have the right-of-way even if there is no marked crosswalk, according to California law.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the person who died in this horrible crash.
There are many steps that should be taken following a collision to ensure your legal rights are protected, but this can vary depending on the circumstances. If injuries are involved, it’s important to get medical help right away to document your injuries and ensure the best possible recovery. If someone has died, a wrongful death claim may be pursued by surviving family members.
