Pilot Killed; Truck Driver Injured in San Pedro Plane Crash
SAN PEDRO, Calif. (Feb. 19, 2021) –Pilot Larry Voit, 53, of Gardena, died and a truck driver was seriously hurt after a single-engine airplane crashed into a big rig Friday afternoon in San Pedro.
The fatal San Pedro plane crash happened about 12 p.m. in the 2500 block of South Navy Way. It took place in an isolated area of the Port of Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The LAFD reported that one person was trapped in a vehicle and in serious condition.
Unfortunately, the pilot of the Piper PA-32 was critically injured and declared dead on scene, the LAFD said. The man who died was identified as Larry Voit and he was the pilot of the plane. It doesn’t appear there were any others on the plane at the time of the crash.
Prior to the arrival of LAFD firefighters, bystanders pulled the injured man from the plane wreckage performed CPR.
Meanwhile, a man in his 30s who is in the semi-truck was transported to a hospital for serious injuries.
There were no further details about what happened.
The National Transportation Safety Board will be involved in the investigation.
