Hit-and-run Driver Jose Fernando Reyes, age 24 of Coachella Arrested
COACHELLA, California (June 8, 2017) –A 56-year-old woman was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver in a pickup truck as she attempted to cross the intersection of Avenue 48 and Grapefruit Boulevard, a California Highway Patrol report said.
The crash took place about 12:30 a.m. this morning. After hitting the woman, the male driver fled the scene of the crash without stopping as required under California law. The woman, who is likely a transient, died of her injuries at the scene. She was later identified as Leletia Meyers of Indio by the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner.
Police later located the suspected hit-and-run driver with the help of the Coachella Community Action Team with the assistance of the Southern Coachella Community Services District Team. He was arrested about 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 9th and was booked at Riverside County jail in Indio. His court date is set for Tuesday next week and he is being held in lieu of $150,000 bail.
