2 Killed, 1 Injured on Highway 71
CHINO, Calif. (May 10, 2024) — Levi King, 54, of San Bernardino, was identified as one of two Caltrans workers who died after they were struck by a box truck on Highway 71, near South Euclid Avenue in Chino.
The second worker who died has not yet been identified. Also, there was a third Caltrans worker who was treated for minor injuries after the traffic accident at around 8:37 a.m. on Monday, May 6th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Caltrans workers were part of a crew of seven people who were working on the shoulder of the freeway. A driver in a white box truck reportedly side-swiped a parked work van occupied by two more workers. The box truck continued traveling north and went through a guard rail before hitting two Caltrans workers including Levi King. The workers were standing on the shoulder along with five others and cleaning the embankment near the guardrail.
Paramedics responded and pronounced Levi King dead at the scene and transported the other to a hospital where he or she died.
Meanwhile, a third Caltrans worker who was in the van was treated for minor injuries.
The box truck driver cooperated with the investigation and there are no criminal charges at this time, but the case remains under investigation.
