Woman Killed in June 1 Del Mar Crash Identified
DEL MAR, Calif. (June 8, 2021) — Lorena Higuera, 52, of Long Beach, died June 1st in a head-on collision on the Interstate 5 Freeway in Del Mar.
The woman was riding as a passenger in a white Honda Civic when a wrong-way driver in a Dodge Magnum crash into the vehicle. Next, a southbound Ford pickup truck could not avoid crashing into the Dodge.
The collision happened about 12:49 a.m. on June 1st at Carmel Valley Road, near state Route 56, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner.
It’s unknown why the 42-year-old man driving the Dodge was traveling north in the southbound lanes.
Paramedics transported several people to hospitals after they were extricated from the wreckage.
Lorena Higuera suffered major injuries and died upon impact. Among the injured was the driver of the Honda and a second passenger in the car. Both people went to the hospital with major injuries.
Also hurt in the crash was the wrong-way driver and the 32-year-old driver of the Ford pickup. They both suffered major injuries and were transported to a hospital.
Police are investigating the collision, but it’s unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
