Three Injured and Ejected From Vehicle Following Crash on I-5
LOS BANOS (January 2, 2018)- According to the Merced Sun-Star, a major injury collision involving a single vehicle was reported Monday morning of New Year’s Day on I-5 close to the Russell Avenue exit.
CHP officials were notified of a crash at 7:40 a.m. where the driver of a black Toyota Camry, a 20-year-old man of Salinas, lost control of the vehicle. The Camry struck the center divider and overturned multiple times before finally coming to rest.
There were two passengers in the vehicle accompanying the driver, both who are only being ID’d as a 16-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man. Both passengers and the driver were each ejected from the Toyota all suffering major injuries.
All three victims were quickly rushed to unspecified hospitals located somewhere in Fresno, per the Merced Sun-Star.
At this time, California Highway Patrol is currently looking into whether or not the driver of the vehicle was under the influence or if there may have been another reason for losing control and crashing.
No further details have been released thus far.

A forensic examination of the vehicle, as well as photos that were taken of the scene, will help investigators determine what ultimately caused the accident. Authorities will thoroughly look into how fast the driver was going, whether or not alcohol or drugs were involved, or whether or not there were any mechanical issues with the vehicle. The investigation will also consist of looking at measurements of evidence left by the vehicle such as final resting positions of each vehicle, skid marks, and gouge marks.
In such cases where negligence or wrongdoing may have been a factor, those injured and not found responsible, the 16-year-old woman and the 19-year-old, may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault driver pending the investigation results. Victims would then have the right to seek compensation for damages including medical expenses and hospital bills, pain and suffering, and lost future income.
