LOS BANOS: Fatal 5 Freeway Accident at Mercy Springs Road

2 Teenagers Killed in Crash with Suspected DUI Driver Sabrina Distura, 21, Arrested

LOS BANOS (March 25, 2018) —  Two of three Nevada City teenagers visiting California on spring break died in a collision with a suspected drunken driver on the Interstate 5 Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol. The third teen was critically injured.

The victims who died have been identified as Tyler Nielson, 17, and Justin Gardner, 16, and the boy who was injured ID’d as Dawson Fay, 16, all of Nevada City.

The crash was so violent that the vehicle apparently split in half, causing one victim to die at the scene, another at a hospital and a third teen suffered major injuries.

At about 11:51 Sunday morning Emergency Services were contacted by several individuals claiming that a vehicle had torn itself in half on the I-5.  Fire and paramedics were quickly dispatched to the scene and arrived to discover a barely recognizable car pulled into the right shoulder and in several pieces.

Sabrina Distura, of San Jose, was reportedly driving a 2015 Honda when she allegedly crossed over into the opposite side of the freeway and struck the Nissan occupied by the teenagers.

After arriving on the scene paramedics quickly began to extricate injured individuals from vehicles.  The driver, 17-year-old Tyler Nielson died at the scene. His 17-year-old passenger Justin Gardner was airlifted to Doctors Hospital in Modesto where he later died of a massive head injury suffered in the crash.

Additionally, a 16-year-old male passenger in the Nissan, Dawson Fay was critically injured. He suffered a major head injury, and injured his elbow and knees. He was taken to Memorial North Hospital in Modesto.

The suspected drunken driver identified as Sabrina Distura, 21, was also hurt. She was transported to Los Banos Memorial Hospital.  Police placed her under arrested for the deadly crash.

The local fire department quickly put out the fire and began to clear the road.  The coroner was called and took the driver of the split vehicle.  At this time police are still investigating the cause of the explosion and more information may follow.

If a negligent driver is at fault for a collision resulting in injuries to you or a loved one, there may also be grounds for a civil lawsuit or personal injury claim. This is always a personal decision, but for many the financial losses associated with a traffic accident are significant.

It’s important to note, however, that it’s quite common for insurance companies to try and avoid paying out a claim even when they know their insured is responsible. They may also make an offer to settle for far less than the full amount owed.
