Ricki Newton Arrested DUI Charges
MONTECITO, Calif. (August 15, 2023) — Louis Hernandez Jr., 77, of Santa Paula, died and four others were injured early Sunday in a cash on Highway 101 near Olive Mill Road.
Also, Ricki Newton, 22, of Port Hueneme, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
The two-vehicle collision occurred around 3:10 a.m. on August 13th, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
The collision involved the drivers of a Mercury Mountaineer SUV and a Toyota Camry, according to the California Highway Patrol. It’s unknown what led up to the traffic accident, but the SUV went down an embankment. A passenger in the SUV, Louis Hernandez Jr., was ejected from the vehicle, Noozhawk reports. Virginia Montelongo, 67, of Santa Paula, who was driving the Mountaineer, was hospitalized due to moderate injuries after she was extricated from the SUV.
Paramedics and firefighters responded to the scene on the southbound side of the freeway just before the Olive Mill Road off ramp. They transported Montelongo and three others to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
Meanwhile, three people riding in the Toyota including its driver Ricki Newton, suffered minor injuries in the collision.
Ricki Newton was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation by CHP detectives.
