Luis Castillo, 37; and Maria Ruiz, 42, Injured in Santa Nella Crash on Interstate 5
SANTA NELLA, CA (April 7, 2021) – A fatal crash left Luis Castillo and Maria Ruiz injured along the Interstate 5 near Santa Nella.
The California Highway Patrol identified the 37-year-old man and the 42-year-old woman as the victims of the wreck last week on Friday night.
The incident happened when Luis Castillo was driving a 2018 Toyota 4Runner at about 65 mph north on the Interstate 5 with Maria Ruiz as his passenger.
At the same time, a 2003 Toyota Camry carrying four Quincy, Washington residents was going south at about 70 mph. For an unknown reason, the Camry traveled into the median and spun out of control.
The driver of the Camry, 30-year-old Guillermina Gonzalez, then went into the No. 2 lane of northbound Interstate 5 directly into the path of the 4Runner.

CHP said the front of the 4Runner collided with the right side of the Camry. The impact pushed the Camry off the east edge of the roadway.
Paramedics took Luis Castillo and Maria Ruiz, both of Oakland, to Emanuel Medical Center with minor injuries. Meanwhile, firefighters pronounced an 8-year-old boy riding the Camry dead at the scene.
CHP added that two more children ended up ejected from the 4Runner and suffered major injuries. Guillermina Gonzalez sustained moderate injuries as a result of the collision.
Medical personnel rushed a 2-year-old girl to Valley Children’s Hospital and a 5-year-old boy to Children’s Hospital San Jose. They also transported Gonzalez to Doctor’s Medical Center for treatment.
The Merced Sun Star reported the accident on April 2 at about 8 p.m., north of Henry Miller Avenue. The cause of the tragic crash is still under investigation.
