National City Hit-and-Run on I-5 Freeway
NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (January 14, 2020) – Luis Felipe Marin, 36, of San Ysidro, died Saturday morning in a multi-vehicle crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway in San Diego.
The California Highway Patrol stated that the driver who caused the crash fled the scene.
The 4-vehicle collision took place just after 4:51 a.m. on northbound Interstate 5 Freeway, just north of State Route 54, police said.
The collision involved a black Toyota Tacoma truck whose driver was allegedly traveling in the fast lane of the northbound 5 Freeway at a high rate of speed.
The pickup allegedly attempted to pass a red car illegally by using the center emergency lane. The pickup truck entered the lane where it crashed into a disabled black Jeep that was parked in the area.
Upon impact, the Jeep overturned and wound up on its roof and the Tacoma also struck the red vehicle it had been trying to overtake. Meanwhile, an oncoming grey SUV driven by Luis Marin ultimately collided with the pickup truck.
Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save Luis Marin who died at the scene. The San Diego Medical Examiner identified Marin as the victim who died.
The motorist in the red car stopped after the crash, but the driver of the Toyota abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
The suspect, who is described as about 5 feet 10 inches, has not been located. Police are searching for the last known driver of the vehicle identified as Raul Brown to question him about the collision, but it’s unknown if he is actually the suspect.
