Woman’s Disabled Van Struck on I-5 Freeway
CARLSBAD, Calif. (Jan. 22, 2025) — Luz Maria Sandoval, 63, died earlier this month when her disabled van was struck by another vehicle on the Interstate 5 Freeway in Carlsbad.
The Carlsbad woman’s Dodge van became disabled in the southbound lanes of the I-5, just north of Poinsettia Lane around 10:50 p.m. on Jan. 9, 2025, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office.
Her son was traveling with her and exited the van to push the vehicle off the freeway, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. However, he had to jump out of the way moments before the van was rear-ended by a driver in a Ford SUV, the report said.
Police and paramedics responded and extricated the woman who was trapped in the van. Medical personnel performed lifesaving procedures, but Luz Maria Sandoval died at the scene.
The accident remains under investigation to determine fault.
