Spechelle Pope, 28, Killed in Palmdale Hit-and-Run Street Racing Crash
PALMDALE, CA (June 9, 2021) – A hit-and-run street racing crash killed Lyft passenger Spechelle Pope in Palmdale on Wednesday.
CBS Los Angeles and My News LA identified the 28-year-old woman as one of the two victims in the wreck which occurred at about 12:30 a.m.
The incident happened when Spechelle Pope was riding a ride-hailing car, a Toyota Corolla, on Rancho Vista Boulevard in Palmdale.
At the same time, a Dodge Challenger was traveling at a high rate of sped west in the No. 2 lane of Rancho Vista. Deputies said the Dodge was racing with another vehicle.
Speeding Driver Hits Lyft Car, Flees Scene
The Challenger then slammed into the rear of the Toyota near the intersection with 11th Street West. The Corolla spun out of control and struck a light pole nearby.
The Toyota rolled over and soon burst into flames. Reports indicated that the man driving the Lyft ended up thrown from the car as a result of the collision.
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced Spechelle Pope and the other victim dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the speeding driver abandoned the vehicle and rode an Infiniti.
The motorist ultimately sped away. Officers described the Dodge Challenger as registered to EAN Holdings LLC., which operates Alamo, Enterprise and National car rentals.
Authorities are still searching for the hit-and-run suspect. The fatal Palmdale street racing crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information can call the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station at 661-272-2400.
