Mac Smith, 64, Killed; Lurlene Smith, 68, Seriously Injured in Palmdale Car Crash
PALMDALE, CA (May 6, 2021) – A car crash on 50th Street East killed Mac Smith and seriously injured Lurlene Smith in Palmdale.
Officers identified the 64-year-old Lancaster man and the 68-year-old Palmdale woman as the victims of the fatal wreck on Thursday morning.
The incident happened when Lurlene Smith was driving a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu north on 50th Street East in Palmdale. At the same time, a 1998 Chevrolet Suburban was going south.
For an unknown reason, the Suburban swerved into the northbound lane just north of Avenue P. Its driver, 52-year-old Michael Reinert, then sideswiped the Malibu.
4 Others Badly Hurt in Collision on 50th Street East
The California Highway Patrol said the Malibu spun out of control and went into the southbound lane. A few moments later, a 2011 Toyota Yaris slammed into the right side of the Malibu.
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced Mac Smith dead at the scene. The Antelope Valley Times and My News LA wrote that the accident occurred at around 3:50 a.m.
Lurlene Smith, her two other passengers, Michael Reinert, and the motorist in the Yaris sustained major injuries as a result of the collision. Reinert is from Lancaster.
Medical personnel soon rushed them to the Antelope Valley Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the cause of the fatal Palmdale crash is still under investigation.
