1 Killed, 4 injured in Madera County Crash on Highway 99 Near Avenue 18 1/2
MADERA COUNTY, CA (April 10, 2022) – A wrong-way crash killed one person and seriously injured several others on Highway 99 near Avenue 18 1/2 in Madera County.
According to The Fresno Bee and ABC 30 News, the tragic accident took place early Sunday. Officers reported the wreck at around 12:30 a.m.
The incident began when a white GMC pickup was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Highway 99 near Avenue 18 1/2 in Madera County. At the same time, a gray SUV was going south.
2 Cars Collide Head-On
The California Highway Patrol said the truck then slammed head-on into the SUV. The GMC caught fire, trapping the wrong-way driver inside.
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced the man dead at the scene. Four people riding the SUV sustained moderate to major injuries as a result of the collision.
Medical personnel rushed all four patients to the Community Regional Medical Center for treatment. The names of the deceased and wounded parties have not been yet released.
Meanwhile, CHP forced southbound Highway 99 to shut down near Avenue 18 1/2 for hours following the wreck. The fatal Madera County crash is still under investigation.
