Boy, 8, Struck by Car in Crosswalk Near Elementary School
MADERA, Calif. (Sept. 19, 2023) — An 8-year-old boy was seriously injured in a pedestrian accident at Ellis Street and Owens Street in Madera.
The child was struck by a motorist around 7:20 a.m. as he crossed the roadway in a crosswalk with his sibling and other students under the supervision of a crossing guard.
It happened in front Ezequiel Tafoya Alvarado Academy, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crossing guard, who was holding a stop sign and wearing a reflective orange vest, had stopped traffic in the westbound lanes and was signaling eastbound motorists to stop, Fox 26 News reports. The guard also waved his arms in the air to get the driver’s attention, police said.
However, a 25-year-old man driving a 2012 Honda Civic failed to notice and drove through the crosswalk before hitting the child.
The child was thrown off the roadway into a gravel area on the roadside. Paramedics responded and rushed the child to Valley Children’s Hospital. The boy suffered major injuries and remains in unknown condition.
Investigators are working on the case, but it’s unknown if there will be charges filed against the driver after the Madera accident on Ellis Street.
