Major Collision on State Route 24 West at the Caldecott Tunnel in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif., (April 28, 2026) — A major injury collision involving a gray GMC Acadia SUV and a red Honda sedan occurred on State Route 24 West on Tuesday morning near the Caldecott Tunnel Bore No. 4.

The incident was reported on April 28th at approximately 8:29 a.m. near Grizzly Peak Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The collision took place in the westbound lanes of SR-24 at the Caldecott Tunnel. Emergency responders, including CHP units and firefighters, were dispatched to the scene. Reports indicate that the impact caused the airbags in the GMC Acadia to deploy.

Victims and Emergency Response

Emergency responders quickly relocated the involved parties to a safer location on Tunnel Road. Both vehicles sustained significant damage, and the individuals involved reportedly sustained major injuries. The identities and conditions of the victims remain undisclosed at this time.

The westbound Bore number 4 was temporarily closed to traffic as fire and medical personnel attended to the injured parties and cleared the roadway.

Ongoing Investigation
