Major Injury Motorcycle Accident on Highway 101, Near Refugio, Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., (August 07, 2026) — A major injury accident occurred Thursday night on US Highway 101 North near Refugio Beach between a motorcycle and a black Honda Pilot west of Goleta in Santa Barbara, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The incident was reported on August 6th at 8:15 p.m., when the motorcyclist reportedly collided with the black Honda Pilot. Initial reports indicate that the motorcycle rider was ejected from the bike and landed on the ground, sustaining serious injuries.
Emergency responders, including paramedics and law enforcement, quickly arrived at the scene. The motorcycle rider was found breathing but in critical condition. Paramedics transported the injured motorcyclist by ground ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
The victim’s identity has not been released. Subsequently, the lanes were cleared, and traffic resumed normal flow.
Motorcycle Accident Investigation Underway
The CHP is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and will determine liability. The 911 caller mentioned the crash “occurred at high speeds.” However, this also happened at a location where traffic merges onto US 101 from a Refugio Road on-ramp. It’s possible that a merging vehicle could have moved into the path of the oncoming motorcyclist. Detectives are working to determine the sequence of events leading to the crash. Meanwhile, authorities urge any witnesses or individuals with additional information to come forward as they investigate and determine fault.
