Major Traffic Collision on SR49 at Watt Road Extension in Mariposa County

MARIPOSA, Calif., (May 1, 2026) — A major injury rollover collision happened Friday afternoon on Highway 49 at Watt Road Extension, just east of Elliot Corner in Mariposa, authorities said.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:16 PM when an overturned vehicle blocked both lanes of State Route 49, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Emergency responders, including the fire department, arrived on the scene shortly after the initial report.

The collision was initially categorized as a minor injury incident but was later upgraded to a major injury collision at 12:46 PM. The circumstances leading to the overturning and the number of vehicles involved remain under investigation.

Emergency personnel, including paramedics, were dispatched to the location to provide medical aid to the injured parties. The identities and conditions of the victims have not yet been released to the public.

The CHP has requested that anyone who witnessed the accident or has information relevant to the investigation contact local authorities. The roadway was temporarily closed to allow emergency services to work safely and to clear the scene.
