Michael Johnson Victim in Tuesday Lancaster Motorcycle Accident
LANCASTER (July 18, 2017)- According to the Antelope Valley Times, a deadly collision between a motorcycle and a big rig was reported early Tuesday morning at Avenue I and 70th Street.
California Highway Patrol officials received a phone call informing them of a collision at 9:18 a.m.
Per the accident report, the driver of a big rig, Eric Seekins, 36, of Lancaster, was headed northbound on 70th Street before pulling directly into the path of a 72-year-old man identified as Michael Johnson who had been riding a 91′ Harley westbound on Avenue I.
Police officials have disclosed so far that Eric Seekins had come to a complete stop before entering the intersection where the Michael Johnson struck the back trailer hitched onto the back of the big rig.
The Lancaster man sadly did not survive and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Seekins suffered minor injuries following the collision, per the AV times. It is unclear if he sought out medical treatment.
California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the collision as the intersection remains closed off at Avenue I and 70th Street for approximately 2.5 hours.
A forensic examination of both the big rig and the motorcycle, as well as photos that were taken of the scene, will help investigators determine which party ultimately caused the accident. Based on the report, signs point to the big rig driver possibly being at fault as Mr. Eric Seekins drove into the path of Michael Johnson who may or may not have had the right of way. Other potential factors will be looked into as well including whether or not either the driver or the motorcyclist was under the influence at the time of the accident? Was either driver driving recklessly or over the speed limit prior to impact? What were the road conditions and how was the lighting in the vicinity of where the accident occurred? Each of these factors will be assessed allowing police officials to draw up a final conclusion.
