The accident occurred about 9:10 p.m. when light rain was reported in the area.
As per the article, California Highway Patrol said the 2008 Ford Focus of an 85-year-old man for an unknown reason became disabled and stopped in a middle traffic lane when an Infiniti FX35 rear-ended the Focus.
The impact forced the Focus into a concrete wall along the freeway edge.
CHP affirmed that the elderly driver suffered major head injuries and was rushed to a trauma center, where he was later pronounced dead. His name has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin.
Meanwhile, the 45-year-old San Diego man driving the Infiniti was unharmed. The incident remains under investigation.
