Driver Falls Asleep, Hits Male Victim Outside His Vehicle
SAN JOSE, California (April 17, 2016) – A man outside his vehicle was killed after being struck on Highway 101 Sunday afternoon, according to San Francisco Gate. (map)
The collision was reported at 4:14 p.m., north of Alum Rock Avenue.
California Highway Patrol said the 60-year-old Daly City man pulled over on the shoulder of the road to check his Mazda MVP that appeared to have a malfunction.
The 60-year-old then exited his car, and was outside the driver’s door when he was hit by a Ford Ranger.
As per San Francisco Gate, the victim suffered fatal injuries due to the force of the crash. His name has not been yet released pending notification of family.
CHP added that the wife and children of the deceased were in the Mazda at the time of the accident.
Meanwhile, the Ford driver told CHP that he briefly fell asleep at the wheel and was not aware of what he had struck.
The incident remains under investigation.
