ELK GROVE, California (December 1, 2016) — An unidentified man died Wednesday night after he was arrested and police used a taser gun to subdue him following a wrong-way collision on Elk Grove Boulevard, according to the Sacramento Bee.
Police say they used a taser gun on the alleged aggressive man who was resisting arrest, but he later died at a hospital after he became unresponsive.
The fatal incident took place on Wednesday night about 10 p.m. Police were alerted about a driver in a white pickup truck who allegedly ran through at least two red traffic lights at Laguna Boulevard and Bruceville Road.
By the time police located the driver at Elk Grove Boulevard and Ginther Drive, the suspect was traveling the wrong way in the westbound lanes of Elk Grove Boulevard. The driver collided with three other motorists before police could stop him. The report does not indicated whether there were any injuries during the crash. The suspect got out of his car and attempted to flee on foot.
Police chased the man and used a Taser gun on him, but the initial shot did not penetrate his jacket and then the man allegedly was acting aggressive towards police. A second shot was fired and police managed to get him down to handcuff him despite further resistance.
Police at the scene then requested a device to further wrap up the suspect as he was still being resistant, but as they waited the man became unresponsive. Medical attention was requested at the scene and he was hospitalized, but died there.
It is not yet known whether the suspect driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but an investigation is underway to determine if these were factors.
A full investigation is underway to determine what the cause of the man’s death was and whether there was unjustified use of force.
