Man Killed in 405 Freeway Crash at Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach

Evan Zeller, 20, Died in Multi-Vehicle Collision Near Signal Hill
LONG BEACH, Calif. (May 9, 2025) – A young man died Thursday night in a multi-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck on the 405 Freeway near Signal Hill in Long Beach, the California Highway Patrol reports.
CHP dispatch logs report the crash happened at 11:01 p.m. on Thursday, May 8th in the southbound lanes at the Atlantic Avenue on-ramp.
The drivers of a box truck and two sedans were involved and all vehicles had major damage, CHP reports said. One of the cars was traveling at “high speed” prior to the crash, the report said, adding the vehicle was “spinning in traffic lanes and hit other vehicles.”
The Long Beach Fire Department responded and pronounced a young man identified as Evan Zeller dead at the scene, according to the Medical Examiner’s office.
Tow trucks responded to remove debris from the collision and damaged vehicles.
Meanwhile, investigators closed down the Atlantic Avenue off-ramp as well as three traffic lanes on the freeway for several hours.
