Man, 29, Killed, 3 Injured in Head-On Crash on SR-46 Near Highway 1
SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. (June 9, 2026) — Cesar Pena Estrada, 29, of Cambria, has been identified as the passenger who died in a head-on collision Sunday morning near Paso Robles on Highway 46 West in San Luis Obispo County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash, which occurred just before 9:40 a.m. on June 7th, happened on State Route 46 when the driver of an eastbound Ford Mustang reportedly crossed into the westbound lane. The 29-year-old Cambria man was a passenger in the Mustang. The car reportedly collided head-on with a white Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck towing a camping trailer driven by Dean Carl Voigt, 62, of Ellisville, Missouri, CHP officials said.
Sadly, Cesar Pena Estrada suffered major injuries and died at the scene. The young man was a player with the SLO Jays Men’s and Women’s Soccer Club in San Luis Obispo. An Instagram post made on Monday expressed sympathy for his passing.
“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Cesar Peña Estrada this morning. Cesar played many seasons for the Jays in both our coed indoor and outdoor leagues, as well as one season in Sunday League. He scored countless goals for our teams, but more importantly, he was a great person, teammate, and friend whose presence will be greatly missed.”
3 Injured in Crash on Highway 46
Meanwhile, the driver of the Mustang, Oscar Pena Estrada, 21, of Cambria, suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to Adventist Health Sierra Vista in San Luis Obispo. It’s unknown at this time whether the driver and passenger in the Mustang were related.
Detectives working on the case believe that alcohol may have played a role in the crash.
Also, Dean Carl Voigt and his passenger were both treated for minor injuries to moderate injuries following the collision. They were both taken to Adventist Health Sierra Vista.
The collision forced the closure of Highway 46 West for several hours and the westbound lanes reopened shortly before 1 p.m., followed by eastbound traffic a short time later.
The crash remains under investigation.
