Woman, 28, Killed, 3 Injured in Labor Day Car Accident

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (Sept. 7, 2023) — Manuel Aguilera, 52, of Bakersfield, Crystal Nunez, 34, of San Jose, and Arturo Garcia, 28, of Victorville, were all injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Labor Day on Highway 166.

Also, an unidentified 28-year-old Victorville woman died in the collision on Cuyama Highway. It happened near the Twitchell Reservoir and Alamo Creek Road, just northeast of Santa Maria.

The fatal crash was reported to be a “mass-casualty incident” in the 7400 block of Highway 166, just east of Highway 101.

It happened just before 1 p.m. on Monday afternoon Sept. 4th, according to Noozhawk. Arturo Garcia was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck eastbound on Highway 166. The 28-year-old Victorville woman was riding as a passenger in the pickup. The truck allegedly tried to overtake a 2003 Chevy Tahoe driven by Manuel Aguilera and both vehicles crashed head-on in the westbound lanes of Highway 166. Meanwhile, a 2018 Toyota Corolla driven by Crystal Nunez was traveling behind the Tahoe and collided with both vehicles.  

Manuel Aguilera, Arturo Garcia Suffer Major Injuries

Manuel Aguilera was airlifted by helicopter to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment of major injuries. The Victorville woman from the Silverado died following the collision. Arturo Garcia suffered major injuries and was transported by ground ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center.

Crystal Nunez was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center to be treated for her minor injuries. .

Meanwhile, police closed down a portion of Highway 166 between Highway 101 and the Cuyama Valley to investigate and clear the crash scene.
