Suspect Arrested DUI, Vehicular Manslaughter Charges
KERN COUNTY, Calif. (Sept. 18, 2023) — Mao Ernesto Arias, 47, was arrested on DUI charges after a fatal Bakersfield pedestrian accident Sunday on Meacham Road in Kern County.
The deadly crash occurred around 2:38 a.m. on Sept. 18th, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
The driver was traveling westbound on Meacham Road when he allegedly struck the pedestrian from behind as they were walking in the same direction, police said.
The victim suffered major injuries in the collision. Paramedics responded and rushed the injured man to a hospital where he later died, according to the Bakersfield Californian.

Meanwhile, the driver reportedly stopped and cooperated with authorities. Police investigating the collision determined that Mao Ernesto Arias was driving under the influence of alcohol, KGET reports. They arrested the motorist and charged him with DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
He is being held in lieu of $120,000 bail and is due to appear in court on Tuesday, Sept. 19th, according to court records and KGET.
Investigators with the Bakersfield Police Department are now piecing together evidence and statements to determine liability for the crash.
