Suspected Drunken Driver Charged With Murder in Wrong-Way Freeway Crash
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 20, 2020) – Marco Abrego, 42, of Northridge, was charged today with murder and other charges related to an alleged DUI, wrong-way crash on the San Diego (405) Freeway in West Los Angeles.
The collision resulted in the death of another motorist, Joey Trianders Allen, 43, of Lancaster.
Court Hearing: A preliminary hearing is scheduled to be set March 13 in Dept. W31, Airport Branch Courthouse, 11701 S. La Cienega Blvd.
The Northridge man plead not guilty to all charges filed against him. The charges were one felony count each of murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing injury, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Abrego reportedly refused to submit to and or take a chemical test to determine his sobriety, the District Attorney’s office reported.
Police reported that Abrego was driving a 2010 Toyota Tacoma southbound in the northbound carpool lane of the I-405 Freeway early Sunday morning. The car crashed head-on into a 2000 Jaguar S driven by Joey Trianders Allen, just south of Getty Center Drive.
The crash took place just after 2:25 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Allen suffered major trauma and died at the scene of the crash, the coroner reported.
Police arrested Abrego after the collision and he remains in jail as he awaits his March 13th court appearance.
