Maria Flores Soto, 25; and Baby Killed in Sutter Crash on Highway 20
SUTTER, CA (February 21, 2023) – Maria Flores Soto and her baby were killed after a DUI crash on Highway 20 in Sutter.
The coroner’s office identified the 25-year-old woman and her 16-month-old son as victims in the fatal wreck which occurred on Monday.
The incident happened when Maria Flores Soto was driving a 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer west on Highway 20 in Sutter. At the same time, a 2021 Chevrolet 3500 was going east.
For an unknown reason, the pickup truck crossed over the double-yellow lines into the path of the SUV. The California Highway Patrol said the Chevrolet 3500 then slammed head-on into the Trailblazer.
The two cars collided near Acacia Avenue. The Sacramento Bee and KCRA News wrote that the accident took place on February 20 shortly after 10:15 p.m.
Boy, 15, Badly Injured in Wreck
Maria Flores Soto and her toddler died as a result of the Sutter crash. Another passenger in the SUV, a 15-year-old boy, survived the collision with major injuries.
Paramedics rushed him to a hospital for treatment. Meanwhile the male driver of the pickup tried to leave the scene, but officers caught and detained him.
CHP determined that he was under the influence when he hit the other car. Medical personnel transported him with moderate injuries.
Officers soon arrested the man for DUI causing serious injury or death and two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter. They charged him with two counts of child endangerment and evading officers.
Officers forced the eastbound lanes of Highway 20 to shut down for hours following the wreck. The Sutter crash that left Maria Flores Soto dead is still under investigation.
