ALHAMBRA, California (August 17, 2017) – Maria Salazar, 50, of Inglewood died today in the hospital after she was hit by a black SUV on Tuesday afternoon at Main Street and Meridian Avenue, the Alhambra Police Department reports.

The suspect in the Nissan SUV who struck Salazar fled the scene of the 1:45 p.m. crash and will now face possible vehicular manslaughter charges.

Police identified the suspect after they arrested him as Erick Reyes-Melo, 28, of Pasadena. He was taken into custody several hours after the fatal crash.

Salazar was taken by ambulance to Huntington Memorial Hospital, but she died of her injuries at 8:19 a.m.,  police said.

Police are piecing together what led to the crash, but preliminary evidence suggests that Reyes-Melo was driving northbound on Meridian Avenue, he made a left turn onto westbound Main Street where he hit Salazar. She had been walking north in a marked crosswalk, police said.

Police initially booked Reyes-Melo on suspicion of felony hit and
run, but later changed the charge to vehicular manslaughter. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday in Alhambra. Police do not suspect he was driving under the influence of alcohol or
drugs.

That’s why it’s important to have an experienced attorney identify all responsible parties and negotiate a settlement with insurance that covers all a person’s losses. The first thing you should do is contact an attorney. Without the representation of a lawyer, insurance companies might make contact with you directly, and since they are trained to protect their best interests, this could mean a loss of rights on your behalf, especially if you unknowingly sign something that they didn't completely explain to you. Handling a personal injury claim by yourself is very difficult. You will deal directly with the insurance adjuster who is often trained to obtain the information they are not entitled to use.
