Suspected DUI Driver Arrested for Fatal Crash
SELMA, Calif. (Oct. 17, 2023) – Maria Trinidad Esquivel, 71, of Clovis, died in a two-vehicle crash in Selma Monday night on Highway 99, north of Mountain View Avenue.
The collision occurred just before the construction lane split at around 9:15 p.m. on Oct. 16th, the California Highway Patrol said.
Chul Kyu Shin, 61, was driving a Chevrolet Express van northbound on Highway 99. Meanwhile, a 76-year-old man driving a Ford Explorer SUV was just ahead of the van and also traveling northbound on Highway 99.
The Chevrolet van reportedly crashed into the back of the SUV, pushing the Ford Explorer off the roadway and into a concrete barrier, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department.
Maria Trinidad Esquivel, 71, of Clovis, who was one of three passengers in the Ford, suffered fatal injuries and died on scene. The driver and two other passengers in the Ford were taken to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
Police responded and closed down the Nos. 2 and 3 lanes of the highway.
Furthermore, the driver from the Chevrolet Express van was not injured, but he was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI. Police detained him and booked him into the Fresno County Jail.
