 Mariano Cruz, Emily Ochoa-Ascencio Fatal Highway 99 Crash in Fresno 2 Killed in Fresno Crash Identified; Driver Arrested DUI

FRESNO, Calif. (Sept. 6, 2022) — Mariano Cruz, 20, of Mendota, and his girlfriend, Emily Ochoa-Ascencio, 18, of Mendota, both died in a Highway 99 crash with a suspected DUI driver near Clinton Avenue in Fresno.

The deadly crash occurred about 5:45 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3rd, according to Fox26News.

UPDATE: There is a GoFundMe account to raise money to pay for funeral expenses for both victims.

Eugene Roebuck, 21, of Fresno, was arrested on multiple charges including DUI following the two-vehicle crash.

Police investigating the crash report that Eugene Roebuck was allegedly speeding before he made an unsafe lane change on Highway 99. The vehicle apparently struck the front of the vehicle driven by Mariano Cruz and caused both drivers to lose control.

The two vehicles went off the roadway and down an embankment. The vehicle occupied by Mariano Cruz and Emily Ochoa-Ascencio crashed into a tree. Both of them suffered major injuries and died at the scene.

Meanwhile, the car driven by Eugene Roebuck crashed through a fence and wound up in a  nearby field.

CHP officials responded and arrested the Fresno man on charges of DUI resulting in death and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. First they took him by ambulance to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Later, they booked him into the Fresno County Jail on $277,000 bail.

Police later arrested Roebuck from jail after he posted a $27,700 bond. His court hearing scheduled for November 8th.
