Mario Lopez, 19, Kills Pedestrian in Woodland Hit-and-Run Crash

WOODLAND, CA (July 16, 2021) – Authorities detained Mario Lopez after a fatal hit-and-run crash near Pioneer Avenue and Tide Court in Woodland.

Police identified the 19-year-old Woodland man as the suspect who killed a pedestrian in a collision on Friday morning.

Woodland police said the incident happened when Mario Lopez struck a male pedestrian. He hit the victim for an unknown reason near the intersection of Pioneer Avenue and Tide Court.

Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and found the 62-year-old man down on the ground as a result of the collision. He died at the scene.

His name remains unreleased pending notification of next of kin. The Sacramento Bee and CBS Sacramento wrote that the accident took place at about 8:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, police affirmed that Mario Lopez did not stop to help the pedestrian and fled the area. They soon located his car in the 1600 block of Gillette Drive, near East Gum Avenue.

Police arrested Mario Lopez in connection with the hit-and-run. They initially believed that the victim had been shot and thrown from the car.

Records showed that officers detained the suspect last year for driving while intoxicated, hitting multiple cars and fleeing the scene. The Woodland hit-and-run crash is still under investigation.
