Shoe Store Owner Shoots at Shoplifters, Hits Child
VICTORVILLE, Calif. (April 13, 2022) — Marqel Cockrell, a co-owner of Sole Addicts, mistakenly shot a 9-year-old girl as he chased after two shoplifters running from his store Tuesday at a Victorville mall.
The shoplifters were the target, but the bullets hit the girl as she waited in a line to get her picture with the Easter Bunny near the Barnes & Noble bookstore at the Mall of Victor Valley. The shooting happened about 6:30 p.m. on April 12th at 14400 Bear Valley Road. The bullets struck her in the arm and shattered her bone. She was taken to a hospital for treatment and is listed in stable condition.
Meanwhile, the suspect left the state and the Marqel Cockrell, 20, of Adelanto, was arrested in Clark County, Nevada. He faces attempted murder charges and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
The man will likely face extradition back to California, according to the Victorville Police Department. The shooting incident remains under investigation by police.
