Man, Woman Die in Fiery 605 Freeway Crash; Driver Arrested on DUI Charges
NORWALK, Calif. (July 16, 2018) – A 52-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman both died early Monday morning in a suspected DUI collision between a car and a minivan on the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway, according to a California Highway Patrol report.
Martina Beshara, 22, of Paramount, was driving the 1999 Ford Winstar van with four passengers when the vehicle became disabled. Besides the two passengers who died, a 7-year-old girl suffered major injuries and she had moderate injuries.
The fiery crash took place about 1:06 a.m.in the northbound lanes of the freeway at Rosecrans Boulevard, police said. Police say the three victims were in the disabled minivan when it was rear-ended by a man driving a 2006 Infiniti M45. The two vehicles became engulfed in flames following the collision.
Alex Barragan, 31, of Norwalk, who was driving the Infiniti, was arrested and booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the CHP.
The occupants of the minivan suffered the worst casualties. Bystanders managed to help the man out of the vehicle as it went up in flames, but he succumbed to his injuries. The woman died in the minivan. Both victims who died were from Paramount.
Police issued a SigAlert at 1:19 a.m. and closed down all northbound lanes at Rosecrans Avenue to investigate the cause of the crash.
