Fatal San Diego 5 Freeway Crash Near Coronado Bay Bridge
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (June 15, 2018) — Mason Calhoun, 24, of Pacific Beach, who was in active duty with the U.S. Navy, died Friday morning in a collision between his 2002 Harley Davidson sportster and a purple 2002 PT Cruiser sedan on the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway, according to a California Highway Patrol report.
The crash took place about 9:26 a.m. this morning near Cesar E. Chavez Parkway. According to the San Diego Medical Examiner, the driver in the PT Cruiser “tried to cross over to get off at the Cesar Chavez Parkway exit at the last moment. The PT Cruiser struck the (motorcyclist) from behind ejecting him and striking a large Cal Trans road construction sign.”
Traffic Accident Investigation
It appears at this time that the driver in the PT Cruiser will be held responsible for this young man’s death. Further investigation is ongoing, but based on preliminary facts, the driver in the car will be at fault.
