Man Struck and Killed on Highway 78 in Vista
VISTA, Calif. (May 1, 2019) — Matthew Keegan, 36, was identified as the pedestrian struck and killed Tuesday night as he attempted to cross state Route 78.
The crash took place about 8:20 p.m. on the eastbound side of the highway between Emerald and South Melrose drives, the California Highway Patrol said. Keegan was initially struck by an eastbound pickup truck and then he was struck by a second vehicle when he fell down into the roadway.
A physician pulled over to help the victim until paramedics arrived and performed CPR on the victim. They transported him to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido where he later died. Keegan was later identified by the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office.
Police say witnesses had called 911 prior to the collision to alert them about the man as he attempted to cross the busy roadway. The drivers of a Chevrolet Silverado pickup and a Mazda3 hatchback both struck the victim.
An investigation is underway by police who are asking witnesses to call them at the Highway Patrol at (858) 637-3800.
