Camp Pendleton Marine from Utah Killed in San Diego Crash is Identified
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Jan. 14, 2020) — Lance Corporal Matthew Ryan Adams, 19, an active duty Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton, has been identified as the driver who was killed Tuesday in a collision with a wrong-way driver on the Interstate 5 Freeway in Carlsbad.
The wrong-way driver, Christian Zurita, 42, also died in the crash.
Matthew Adams was reportedly traveling northbound on the I-5 Freeway when a car driven by Christian Zurita entered the freeway in the wrong direction and crashed head-on into his car. The young marine, who is from Orem, Utah, had just flown back to San Diego after visiting his family for Christmas vacation. He was only five miles from his base when the crash took place.
Zurita was allegedly fleeing police officers while driving a dark-colored Ford F-150 pickup truck. He crossed over into northbound lanes from the southbound side of the freeway and crashed into Matthew Adam’s car.
Police stated that prior to the deadly crash, Zurita failed to stop for a traffic violation on Carmelo Drive near Harbor Drive in Carlsbad.
During the police pursuit, Zurita reportedly drove away at speeds of 100 mph before he went across the freeway into opposing traffic to allegedly evade police.
The Oceanside Police Department reportedly called off the pursuit, but kept watch on the driver overhead in a San Diego County Sheriff’s Office helicopter.
The crash remains under investigation by police.
