Head-on Car Accident Ortega Highway 74
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. (July 17, 2018) — Maureen Mendoza, 43, of Tustin died and a Winchester man suffered major injuries early Tuesday morning in a head-on collision on the eastbound Ortega Highway 74, just east of Rancho Carrillo, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was first reported to the CHP at 5:28 a.m. this morning between Mendoza’s 2006 BMW and the man’s 2015 Chevrolet SUV. Police say the BMW was traveling eastbound when it veered over into westbound lanes and struck the SUV. One of the vehicles overturned and traffic was backing up to the curve. The eastbound lanes were blocked, prompting a SigAlert as police on the scene investigated the cause of the crash.
Paramedics responded and transported the critically injured Winchester man who was driving the Chevrolet to a hospital. Mendoza died of her injuries at the scene.
The collision was located just north of Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park and the entrance to numerous campgrounds.
