MEAD VALLEY, California (January 26, 2015) – Juan Mejia, 49, has been identified as the man killed Sunday afternoon when he was struck by a falling tree while helping a homeowner cut it down in the 21400 block of Dawes Street, according to a dispatch by the Riverside County Fire Department.
CAL FIRE/Riverside County Firefighters responded to the scene about 5:03 p.m., but the man died at the scene.
“This is a tragedy for this man’s family as they cope with his sudden loss,” Attorney James Johnson. “My condolences go out to them at this difficult time.”
Fatal tree accidents are more common than many people think. A tree trunk and limbs can be extremely heavy and once gravity takes hold if it, it can fall quickly. Any property owner whose tree causes injury or death may be held liable for the accident under California laws.
