Melanie Aszterbaum, Severely Injured in Cathedral City Hit-and-Run Near Minerva Road and Avenida La Vista
CATHEDRAL CITY (December 23, 2017) – A pedestrian severely injured after an alleged hit-and-run collision near Candy Cane Lane Thursday evening has been identified as Melanie Aszterbaum, according to KESQ.
The Thermal woman is a victim of a pedestrian accident which occurred at around 6:50 p.m. on December 21 in the area of Minerva Road and Avenida La Vista.
As per the article, Aszterbaum was with her partner and other family members looking at the lights along Candy Cane Lane when a motorist stopped on Avenida La Vista to allow her to cross the street.
In the process, another vehicle drove around the stopped car and ultimately struck Aszterbaum near the intersection. She was left with severe injuries including brain and spleen bleed, and broken leg, pelvis and lumbar.
Aszterbaum was rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center where she will undergo surgery. Her condition at this time was not disclosed.
Meanwhile, the motorist who hit her did not stop to render aid and fled the scene. The suspect vehicle is described as a newer yellow American-made sports car with a black racing stripe possibly Chevy Camaro, a Corvette or a Dodge Challenger. It sustained front-end damage as a result of the incident.
On Saturday police arrested the suspect, Avinder Singh Cheeman, at his home in Palm Springs. The 21-year-old man was arrested for felony hit-and-run.
