GARDEN GROVE (January 1, 2019) – An alleged DUI driver who killed a woman and a child in a crash early Tuesday on the 22 Freeway has been arrested, according to KTLA.
Melvin Cleveland Branch, 30, was booked on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
As per the article, California Highway Patrol said Branch was driving a BMW sedan at an extremely high rate of speed on the westbound 22 Freeway when it collided with the rear of a Lexus in the carpool lane.
The Lexus hit a sound barrier wall on the right shoulder while the BMW crashed into a 2010 Ford F-150 pickup truck. The truck rolled onto its side and slid across traffic lanes while being pushed by the BMW.

Both cars ultimately came to a rest after slamming into a guard rail. However, the overturned pickup was struck by a Mazda sedan which was then forced into the center divider.

Meanwhile Branch, who suffered minor injuries upon impact, was determined to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time. He was immediately detained but kicked the rear window of the patrol car and jumped out.
Officials were able to seize the suspect whose bail was set at $100,000. The collision occurred just before 1 a.m., east of Valley View Street.
