SAN JOAQUIN RIVER, California (April 1, 2016) — Melvin Mendez, 25, of Mendota died on March 27 shortly after he was struck by a personal watercraft vehicle in the Mendota Slough of the San Joaquin River, according to a report by the Modesto Bee.
The crash took place after Mendez allegedly made an unsafe turn in front of the second WaveRunner vehicle whose driver was unable to avoid the crash. Bystanders helped the injured man out of the water and he was rushed to a local hospital, but he died of his injuries. There was no word on whether the other rider was injured in the crash.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Department is heading up an investigation into the crash.
