Memorial Day Weekend: 23 Fatalities, 1,100 DUI Arrests on California Roads
CALIFORNIA — Despite increased law enforcement presence over the Memorial Day weekend, tragic consequences unfolded on California’s highways.
Indeed, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports there were 22 fatal crashes that claimed 23 lives, including nine individuals who were not wearing seat belts and two pedestrians.
CHP officers were deployed statewide with enhanced patrols during the holiday weekend to crack down on unsafe driving behavior. In total, 1,135 DUI arrests were made between Friday and Monday in an effort to reduce alcohol and drug-related collisions.
