UPDATE: Matthew Carp, 55, of Menifee ID’d as Bicyclist Killed in Meniffe Crash
MENIFEE, California (July 24, 2014) – A bicyclist was killed late Wednesday afternoon after being hit by a driver who was allegedly speeding on Domenigoni Parkway at Lindenberger Road, according to a Press Enterprise article.
The fatal bicycle crash took place about 5:20 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Domenigoni Parkway. One rider was declared dead at the scene and a second cyclist was unharmed, the report said.
Police closed down the roadway to conduct an investigation into the fatal crash and interviewed the driver identified as Luis Aranda Llamas, 23, of San Jacinto. He was subsequently arrested and booked into Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta on charges of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and for having a car with a fictitious license plate.
Llamas was released after a few hours, but police are expected to request the District Attorney’s Office review the case for possible prosecution.
The Inland Empire Biking Alliance is planning to place a Ghost Bike memorial at the scene of the crash this Saturday afternoon to honor the fallen cyclist.
According to bikinginla.com, the number of fatal bicycle accidents in Riverside County this year has reached 10 and is double the previous year’s total of five fatal crashes. The cyclist’s death is also the 55th to take place in Southern California so far this year.
“My condolences go out to family of this man as they cope with such a terrible loss,” said Attorney James Johnson. “Hopefully there will be some justice for them as police investigate the crash.”
