
Deadly Accident on State Route 99
MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (July 20, 2023) — A tire or axel fell off a semi-truck and struck a pickup truck on the opposite side of Highway 99 on Thursday morning in Merced County near the North Franklin Road off-ramp in Fergus.
The CHP reported the tire crossed over from the northbound lanes into the southbound No. 1 lane where it hit the oncoming driver of a grey Nissan Frontier pickup truck.
A 58-year-old Avenal woman died in the 10:41 a.m. crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. There were no injuries to a 5-year-old child seated in the back seat of her pickup truck.
CHP officials reported the semi-truck lost its No. 4 axel before it pulled over and stopped on the northbound shoulder of Highway 99, just south of Franklin Road.
An investigation into the Merced tire accident on Highway 99 is underway by the CHP and Merced Police Department.
