1 Killed, 1 Seriously Injured in Merced County Crash on Highway 59 Near Furtado
MERCED COUNTY, CA (June 21, 2022) – A head-on crash killed two people and seriously injured one person on Highway 59 near Furtado Road in Merced County.
According to The Merced Sun Star and FOX 26 News, the tragic accident took place on Tuesday morning. Officers reported the wreck at about 4:15 a.m.
The incident happened when three sedans were going south on Highway 59 near Furtado Road in the El Nido town of Merced County. At the same time, a 2022 Volvo big rig was traveling north.
For an unknown reason, the semi-truck drifted into the oncoming traffic. The California Highway Patrol said the Volvo then slammed head-on into the three cars.
Big Rig Hits Cars Head-On
CHP described the sedans as a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe, a 2011 Ford Fusion and a 2015 Chevrolet Sonic. Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and pronounced two victims dead at the scene.
Officers identified them as a 33-year-old Merced man driving the Hyundai and a 22-year-old Merced man riding as a passenger in the Ford.
The driver of the Fusion, a 20-year-old man, sustained major injuries as a result of the collision. Medical personnel rushed him to the Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for treatment.
The names of the deceased and wounded parties have not been yet released. The motorist in the Chevrolet, a 54-year-old Los Banos man, and the operator of the truck, a 28-year-old Kingsburg man, ended up unharmed.
Officers forced a stretch of Highway 59 to shut down near Furtado for several hours following the incident. The cause of the fatal Merced County crash is still under investigation.
