Michael Channing Peake, 80, Killed in Highway 101 Crash Near Nojoqui Summit
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, CA (May 5, 2021) – A crash killed Michael Channing Peake on Highway 101 near the Nojoqui Summit in Santa Barbara County.
The Sheriff’s Office identified the 80-year-old Santa Barbara man as the victim of the fatal accident which occurred on Monday morning.
The incident happened when Michael Channing Peake was driving a Jeep pickup north on Highway 101, just south of the Nojoqui Summit. At the same time, a GMC was going south.
For an unknown reason, the GMC crossed into the northbound lane. Its driver, 34-year-old Salinas resident Juliel Montes, went directly into the path of the Jeep.
Possible Head-On Collision in Santa Barbara County
The California Highway Patrol said Juliel Montes then apparently hit the other car head-on. The Santa Maria Times and Noozhawk wrote that the wreck took place on May 3 at about 7:30 a.m.
Firefighters along with the paramedics responded and found Michael Channing Peake trapped in his pickup as a result of the crash. They extricated him from the wreckage.
Medical personnel soon pronounced Peake dead at the scene. Meanwhile, CHP affirmed that Montes ended up unharmed following the collision.
