Matthew Gibbs Arrested for DUI; Michael Pershall Victim Fatal Bicycle Accident
MODESTO, California (August 23, 2017) –Modesto Police Sergeant Michael Pershall has been identified as the off-duty police officer killed in a bicycle accident due to a suspected drunken driver.
Matthew David Gibbs, 32, of Modesto was arrested after he killed the 38-year-old Modesto police officer the collision. His vehicle struck the officer’s bicycle on Merle Ave, according to the Modesto Police Department.
The off-duty Modesto police officer was struck by the vehicle about 6 p.m. on Tuesday on Merle Avenue and he died at the scene, police said. Police say the Volkswagen driven by Gibbs was heading westbound when it struck the bicyclist. The vehicle then went up onto the curb and hit a fire hydrant.
Fatal Crash Investigation
Gibbs was found to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and was arrested and booked into Stanislaus County Jail. There was no bail amount set. The charges against Gibbs were not disclosed. The crash is under investigation by the Modesto Police Department.
The family of the victim who died in this collision may also have grounds for a wrongful death lawsuit.
