Los Banos Man, 41, Killed in Truck-Pedestrian Crash on Highway 165
LOS BANOS, Calif. (July 24, 2018) — Miguel Angel Martinez, 41, of Los Banos, died Monday morning when he was struck by a tractor-trailer truck while crossing Highway 165, according to the Merced County Coroner Office.
The crash took place about 10:40 a.m., on Mercey Springs Road (Hwy 165) near Middle Road. The collision led to the closure for several hours of a portion of Highway 165 near Los Banos.
The pedestrian who died had been crossing the highway when he was hit by the big rig truck. Carlos Hilario Soto, 47, of Delhi, was identified as the uninjured driver of the 2012 Freightliner tractor trailer truck.
The crash remains under investigation by the CHP.

At this time, it’s unknown who is going to be held responsible for this collision. There are certainly many unanswered questions such as who had the right-of-way, whether or not there was sufficient time given at the traffic light for the pedestrian to cross and whether or not speed or distractions played a role.
