CABAZON, California (May 11, 2016) — A man identified as Miguel Rolon Sr., 59, of Thermal, was killed Wednesday morning when a semi-tractor trailer truck slammed into a disabled big rig at “full speed” on the eastbound Interstate 10 Freeway, just west of Haugen Lehmann at Mile Marker 22, a California Highway Patrol report said.
Per the Press-Enterprise, Miguel Rolon has been the driver of a big rig vehicle, towing a trailer, when his vehicle stopped for unknown reasons. Rolon exited his vehicle and stood at the back of the trailer waving his arms in the air to signal to oncoming traffic that his vehicle had malfunctioned.
At Miguel Rolon continued waving his arms, the big rig he was in was struck by Roger Ellis, 64, who had been driving a Federal Express 2015 Volvo truck, accompanied by his passenger, Mark Mulholland, 59.
The collision resulted in fatal injuries to Rolon as he was thrown to the ground with great force. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Both Roger Ellis and Mark Mulholland suffered injuries to a moderate degree. Mulholland was hospitalized while Ellis declined transportation
Two other big rigs were also involved in the collision. Both big rig drivers suffered injuries as well and were hospitalized.
A full investigation into the fatal crash is underway.
